One can be said to be the first modern snuff. In the early 1800s, snus was produced by fermenting tobacco at elevated temperatures for up to six months. Jacob Fredrik Ljungl\u00f6f had a theory: if tobacco could be processed without fermentation, it would both taste better and could be produced more efficiently. He turned to his friend the chemist Jacob Berzelius for advice. Together, they created a new method for producing snus, using tobacco, salt, water and pot ash.
